  2.        This is ALL YOU NEED to begin using inform-Z (tm) right NOW!

  5.        Thank you for trying inform-Z  ((tm) pronounced "informs").
  6.  
  7.        We believe inform-Z is the most flexible, easy-to-use forms
  8.        program available.  We've put enormous amounts of time into
  9.        ensuring that it has the features you need, and that it works
  10.        in a simple, logical way (with easy to remember commands).
  11.        You'll be amazed at how delightful it is to use, and how
  12.        easily and quickly you'll be able to accomplish things.

  15.        We asked you to "read this first" because, if you do, you
  16.        may NEVER HAVE TO CONSULT THE MANUAL.  Why?  Because this
  17.        brief introduction will explain all you need to know to
  18.        run inform-Z' "LESSON FORMS."
  19.  
  20.         * inform-Z includes a series of lesson forms which demonstrate
  21.           how to use almost every feature of inform-Z.
  22.  
  23.         * If you go through each lesson form in order, you'll find that:
  24.  
  25.           - You'll very quickly learn how to use inform-Z.  And you'll
  26.             learn more quickly than if you started with the manual
  27.             since you'll be able to see things happen.
  28.  
  29.           - You may never need to print or read the manual (okay,
  30.             so maybe you'll have to look up a few details).
  31.  
  32.           - When you do consult the manual, it'll make much more sense
  33.             since you'll already be familiar with what we're explaining.

  35.        LESSON FORMS
  36.        ============

  38.        You'll find about 15-20 lesson forms here.
  39.  
  40.         * Lessons numbered 1-19 (ie., lesson1.pff  to  lesson19.pff)
  41.           explain the basics.  (Note:  There may NOT be 19 lessons;
  42.           but we reserved 1-19 for the basics.)

  44.           Lessons 1-19 will show you how to:
  45.  
  46.           - Draw boxes and lines
  47.           - Add text
  48.           - Shade, erase, copy and move areas
  49.           - Add Big! Fonts
  50.           - Preview forms
  51.           - and more
  52.  
  53.         * Lessons 20 and beyond (eg., lesson20.pff) explain inform-Z'
  54.           advanced features:
  55.  
  56.           - How to automate forms with edit fields, formulas, dates,
  57.             time-stamps, sequence numbers, etc.
  58.           - How to use inform-Z' extensive "printer management" features.
  59.

  62.        To learn how to use inform-Z, all you have to do is run inform-Z,
  63.        load a lesson form, then practice what that form describes.
  64.  
  65.        Reviewing each form should take no more than about 2-10 minutes.

  68.        Here are some terms you'll see in our discussion below.

  70.        When you see this:      It means you should press:

  73.            <Tab>               the TAB key on your keyboard.
  74.            <Enter>             the ENTER or RETURN key.
  75.            <Space>             the SPACE BAR on your keyboard.

  78.        Step 1.  Run inform-Z.
  79.  
  80.                 Move to the drive/directory it's on, then type
  81.  
  82.                      ifz <enter>
  83.  
  84.  
  85.        Step 2.  Load lesson #1  (ie., load the form called LESSON1.Pff).
  86.  
  87.                 Press F4 (load form).  A dialog box will appear.
  88.  
  89.                 You can then either:
  90.  
  91.                   - Press <Tab> to move the cursor to the box labelled
  92.                     "Load which form?" then type in "lesson1."  Press
  93.                     <enter> twice to say "OK -- that's what I want."
  94.  
  95.                   - Or, press <Tab> 3 times to move the highlight to
  96.                     the "button" which says "Directory."  Press <Space>
  97.                     to "select" that option (ie., tell us you'd like
  98.                     to choose a form from a directory of form names).
  99.  
  100.                     Another dialog box will pop up.  Press <Tab> twice
  101.                     to move the highlight to the menu on the right side.
  102.                     Press the Up/Down cursor pad keys to highlight
  103.                     the form named "LESSON1.PFF."  Press <Enter> or
  104.                     <Space> to accept it.

  107.        Step 3.  Now just follow the instructions in each form.
  108.  
  109.                 Press the PgDn and PgUp cursor pad keys to browse
  110.                 around.  At the end of each form you'll be asked
  111.                 to load the next lesson form.

  118.        Step 4.  Try out each thing that form asks you to do.
  119.  
  120.                 [1]  <--- see the 1 here?  Many forms will ask you
  121.                 to move the cursor to a spot, and then press a key
  122.                 to do something (like draw a box or a line).
  123.  
  124.                 - Use the cursor pad keys to move the blinking cursor
  125.                   to that spot.
  126.  
  127.                   OR, if you have a mouse, just move the mouse cursor
  128.                   to that spot and click the LEFT mouse button.  Clicking
  129.                   LEFT "anchors" the blinking text cursor there.
  130.  
  131.                 - You'll then be asked to press another key to do
  132.                   something at that point.

  136.        NOTE:  When you press F4 to load the next lesson, inform-Z will
  137.               sometimes ask you:
  138.  
  139.               +-------------------------------------------------------+
  140.               | Form hasn't been saved.  Would you like to do it now? |

  143.               The reason it's asking you this is that you may have
  144.               changed the form (by drawing lines or boxes, moving
  145.               things, etc.)

  147.               SELECT NO.  Press <Tab> to highlight the button "NO" (ie.,
  148.               don't save this).  Then press <Space> to select it.
  149.

  151.        THAT'S IT!  Using inform-Z is very easy to use with its point-
  152.        and-click interface, it's mouse/keyboard options, and its easy-to-
  153.        remember commands.
